If your machine is of an even a more recent spec and not performing then there
may be something else wrong.
The biggest factors in slowing Voiceover down for me are
1. Not using Alex as default voice creates problems.
2. I have learnt not to use activities.
3. The number of external drives I have attached makes a difference. If these
multiply then the time the Mac takes to boot increases a lot, especially if
they are slow big drives.
4. Permissions repair and using clean my Mac also seems to speed up matters.
Generally I would have a look at what is being loaded at start up to see if
what is being loaded and take out anything you do not need.
