Is it muted? If you have an Apple keyboard, and accidentally hit F10, your speakers will be muted. Remember that headphone volume is different, so even though the internal speaker is muted, the headphone volume is not. That is, checking sound settings with headphones in will not report the settings for when headphones are removed.
