I think the issue with Apple “Moving on” is that the consumer is never ready for it. In a sense, that’s a testament to Apple’s forward-thinking approach, but it also means that they are the first to draw the fire for having the audacity to bring something to market without standardising it by committee first, which I legitimately believe has its drawbacks. I do sometimes wish standards were more often on the table, for sure. And it’s not as if Apple doesn’t enjoy the closed, vertical approach, because it helps their bottom line (remember FireWire?). And sometimes Apple makes false moves: dropping optical has thus far been a boon for laptops but has not seen quite as much love on the desktop and AIO side (iMac, now the thinnest desktop you’ll ever use, if you don’t mind that you can’t play your DVDs in it or remote-control it any more).
So, I understand the anger and criticism. I also confidently predict that history will repeat itself, and in a decade or so we’ll all be fondly remembering the 3.5 mm plug and the good old days. :) As for my hopes, I hope that Apple will not fragment the market and that an open standard will emerge. It is either that, or the standard in question becomes Lightning. Otherwise, in a decade we’ll all be remembering with fondness the days when one could plug ones audio equipment into any available headphone or mini-SPDIF socket. I wonder why Apple did not replace the headphone socket with a mini-SPDIF socket?
