Hi Chris, No, you could continue to use Lightning. Europe simply standardised the universal charger to be Micro USB. In other words, your phone had to support it, somehow, in order to be compliant. This was intended to reduce electrical waste, a laudable goal in itself, by reducing the number of chargers required, and of course also had the positive side-effect of making it possible for any consumer to charge their phone anywhere there was a charging cable, pod, cradle or dock. This is actually not dissimilar to the new type C USB connector that is at last happening. Interestingly, Apple approved of the motion in 2009, but when the iPhone 5 was released, did not follow through on it. The adaptor is quite a poor substitute.
