An iPhone repair engineer confirmed that the 3.5mm audio output is quite 
space-requiring. So, the space saving theory have good odds.

Personally, I think the whole change comes down to space savings.  They may 
save money but the big  thing they want is more realestate to put components in 
the phone and or the ability to make it thinner.  I doubt the human ear gains 
much by having the signal handed to the headphones digitally or over an analog 
path.  That few feet of cable isn’t going to make that much difference.

I don’t think it’s a pure money grab though, I could be wrong but I don’t get 
that feeling.
