I personally don’t use Windows much either, mostly for playing games in fact, but VMWare Fusion means more to me as a Linux sysadmin. I’d’ve loved to see it improve to be as feature-complete as Workstation for Linux, even though I imagine that will probably never happen, under whatever management.
But honestly, I’m more dismayed that VMWare thinks it’s a good idea to lay off such obviously competent and knowledgeable people. Workstation is how VMWare started, for God’s sake. If the bean counters have worked out that sending these jobs to (wherever) actually makes sense, what does that say about the priority of the products going forward? Is this just going to be yet another niche moneymaker with just enough potential in it to keep alive? Like I said, we shall have to see how this all shakes out. I am worried about the growth of Mac OS X, which I don’t see as entirely healthy for accessibility, and I daresay this would be tested if we lost Fusion completely. If we lost access to alternative platforms, we would suddenly lose certain things that Windows or Linux is indisputably better at, and that would definitely suck for me and some others who benefit from them. -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list.
