Apple provides a copy of Postfix with OS X configured for a pretty reasonable 
direct-to-MX setup, and it would be possible to modify this to work with your 
ISP, to support programs that rely on the command-line submission interface.  
Alpine would work with that, although I’d prefer to build Exim.  Nevertheless 
both Alpine and Mutt now support SMTP directly like every other client, so 
there is no need for a dedicated /usr/sbin/sendmail interface anymore; just 
tell Alpine or Mutt what your ISP SMTP server is and it will connect directly 
and send the message without the intermediate MTA running on your own machine.
