Hi Carlene,

Don't be afraid to ask questions if you encounter problems; we usually know
about them from personal experience when we got started (smile). First, when
you started by using Finder, did you first press Command-Shift-H? That's the
shortcut for navigating to your Home directory, and you should hear VoiceOver
say "Home". If I know the folder I want to navigate to, I'll usually use
Command-Shift-G for "Go to Folder" and then type in the folder name, but if I'm
uncertain about the location, or simply think I might have made a typing error,
I'll do it in steps, either by typing or by navigating through the directory.
You can try either method. Best guess is that you typed in
"Library/Preferences" and may not have started from your home folder. If so,
when you use "Go to folder"(Command-Shift-G) and type in "Library/Preferences"
(without the quotes) and press return, it won't find the folder. You can also
try typing this in steps, by first going to the "Library" folder by using
Command-Shift-G and typing "Library" and pressing return, and then pressing
Command-Shift-G and typing "Preferences" and pressing return (no slashes in
either name). Alternatively, try just navigating through the table (which is
what I do the first time I explore files and folders) so that you can also use
your arrow keys to explore content. I usually use Finder in list view mode for
this, but this is an individual preference. Here's what I would do after
bringing up a Finder window:

1. Press Command-Shift-H to go to the Home directory
2. (Optionally using Command-2 to set to list view mode, if this is not already
set up for Finder)
3. Navigate (VO-Right Arrow) to the table and interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow)
4. Press "l i" to navigate to "Library"
5. Press Command-Down Arrow to move into the Library folder
6. Press "p r" to navigate to "Preferences" (you'll probably encounter
"PreferencePanes" first, so just arrow down from there)
7. Press Command-Down Arrow to move into the Preferences folder
8, Navigate to "com.apple.VoiceOver.plist" if you want to copy or delete this
file.

Preference files sometimes get set with odd values, which is why James
suggested trashing the file. You could save a copy to your Desktop or other
location. What happens when you next use the application is that a new
preference file gets generated, but with default values. If you find that the
preference file was not the source of your problems, you can always copy it
back to this library, so that your previous preference values are saved.

HTH. Write back if you have more questions.

Cheers,

Esther
