Hi there Christopher,

Most people, when reading standard 6 dot Braille, use their fingertips to do 
so. years of experience have taught me that the easiest way to read 8 dot 
Braille is to use the flat part of your finger, just behind the tip.

Yes, it is rather awkward in the beginning, but a little bit of practice does 
help.
