Yes, this is in general a good idea for web sites. I used to get FaceBook and LikedIn used to be especially bad with showing / hiding items when a mouse moved over a particular spot, causing slowdowns and lockups. I believe they don't have that issue now, so perhaps they can detect a screen reader that moves mouse with focus and disable that hover actions. Especially since you have discovered a issue and a work around, letting their accessibility team know the issue would be great!
