I consider it rather interesting that Apple didn't make this public. It was in 
some of the technical data for beta testing. In fact, they have had an 
algorithm in place since iOS 9.x called low power mode (which is essentially 
the same type of protection, except it is triggered at 20% battery level). 
Also, since iOS 6, statistics have been fed back to apple via their quality 
assurance settings inside the phone, and some of those stats included battery 
health. So, it is likely that they knew about battery issues well in advance of 
the current technology. 

anyway, aside of apple keeping it under their hat, I dopes along with some 
conspiracy theorists have concocted a scenario whereby they can sue apple and 
actually have it make it into court.
