Hum, that's probably not great for us, especially as computers run cooler and are built more solid state. We will have to do some clever manouvers at times just to figure out whether the thing is powered off, or whether it's on and not making sound for some reason.

Hi,

Certain units still have the chime as part of the startup process. As far as I know, it is not a user configurable setting. Sometimes, in some of the newer machines, resetting the PRAM will allow the chime to sound, but only during the reset process. Regular and future restarts will not sound the chime. The MacBook Pro line and many of the newer iMacs do not sound the chime anymore. I'm guessing that it is the way of future Macs as they redesign various models.

My 2017 Air emits the chime, and I didn't have to do anything to get it to do so. It sounded the chime out of the box.

I still have the chime on my late 2011 Macbook Pro. It's all about the hardware, somewhat. Newer macs don't emit a chime, older ones do.

Chime on boot was taken away with sierra 10.12.x,

And the touch bar was added in the late 2016 mac book pros I believe.

But not all MBP have to have the touch bar.

Subject: Laptops: When did things change?

Anyone recall when it was that Apple removed the physical function keys and replaced them with the touch sensitive strip? Put differently, what models were the last to have physical keys?

Similarly, what models were the last to have the chime on boot?

I recognize this is somewhat of an oddball question, but if anyone recalls any of these details, I'd be most grateful.
