I make things difficult on myself by forgoing monitors whenever possible.
Most macs have monitors included but I have gravitated towards the mini,
since smart devices do nearly all of my computing these days except for
serving files and the development work for my programming courses.

Certain units still have the chime as part of the startup process. As far
as I know, it is not a user configurable setting. Sometimes, in some of
the newer machines, resetting the PRAM will allow the chime to sound, but
only during the reset process. Regular and future restarts will not sound
the chime. The MacBook Pro line and many of the newer iMacs do not sound
the chime anymore. I'm guessing that it is the way of future Macs as they
redesign various models.
