Ah yes, there's the button, big as life. Thank you. I was so sure that the answer might lie in the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab of the Mail settings that it did not occur to me to check the first tab in the series. I have pressed the "remove now" button and then deleted all of the messages in my Mac's "trash" folder. I have also set the "delete" period from now on to one week. We'll see if the odd behavior recurs.
