Hello,
Here is something odd. The install media I created does not show up in system
preferences as a startup disk. However I just did a restart and held down the
options key while it was rebooting. I had my sighted son look at the screen and
low and behold the USB Drive showed up there. This is really odd.

Hello,
I just did the get info command on the volume. Yes it is bootable and the
others that were mentioned are set the way they should be. I have tried it in
both of the USB ports with the same results. It will not show up in the startup
disk section of system preferences. Hopefully my new flash drive will be here
soon to try.

Hi,

It sounds like the USB media that you're using does not support the install
media. Verify the state of the USB media by going into Disk Utility, then
selecting the "Install MacOS Catalina" item from the selection table. Make
sure to select the "Install MacOS Catalina" volume, not the parent disk. Once
selected, press cmd-i to Get Info on the volume. Read through the various
information items and make sure that it says that the device is bootable. Some
specific items that are also important are if ownership is set to "No", File
System is "MacOS Extended (Journaled", "Yes" to writeable and "Yes" it can be
verified. If all that is good, but it is still not bootable, have you tried
putting the stick into a different USB port on your Mac? Beyond these
suggestions, I'd wait until your new USB comes from Amazon and see how things
proceed with that media.

I just tested the process using Terminal and it worked properly. That is, the
disk creation worked through it various copying, installing, making bootable
processes and completed. I then checked in the Startup Disk pane and it was
visible as a startup item. Basically, if you don't see it as a bootable item
from within the Startup Disk pane, then using the option key method will not
work either. FYI, my media was a 16 GB stick with a 2017 MacBook Pro with a
brand new installer of 10.15.2 from Apple.

HTH.

Hello,
I did try using the terminal last night and still no go. The process seems to
finish okay but the USB drive still does not show up in the startup disk
section of system preferences. Even when I unlock it so I can make changes
there is only one option and that is the hard disk. I am using the full Mac OS
catalina installer. Its an 8GB file in my applications folder. I did go into
recovery mode but I did not see anything that would enable me to boot from a
USB drive. I think that might be a thing you can do with Macs that have the T2
chips only.

Easier? Maybe? I have used the app many times and it has never failed. Matter

shows up in startup. So I do not think the terminal would fare any better.

Hi greg,
If the USb flash drive doesn't have a bootable package on it
Then no you wont see it in start up disks as there is nothing on the USB device

If you have the bootable Catalina installer the full package then it would be
easier by far to create the installation media from the terminal command line.

Hello,
Well I downloaded install disk creator and it does have a much better interface
than disk maker X. When I used it, it appeared to have worked. However when I
go into system preferences/startup disk the flash drive is not listed. No
matter what I do I cannot get this to work. I have a new flash drive on order
from amazon that comes tomorrow. Both of the ones I have are older ones. They
are USB 2.0 and 16GB. The new one is USB 3.1 and is 32GB. Anything else I can
try while waiting on the new flash drive? Also if I do a restart and hold
option down is there a way for me to tell if it did use the USB drive to boot?
Thanks,
