The process you've outlined is more or less the same as I. Wow, either great
minds think alike, or fools seldom differ :). My MBP is similar to yours in
that it is a 2017 model with 16 GB RAM, 4 Thunderbolt ports, Touch Bar etc. I
move messages from one account into a different account's mailbox sometimes as
well, and it seems seamless to me. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I'm
just having better luck than you.

I use the same processes you described. Still by mid day I end up with many
windows open.
Even though having all windows closed helps a lot moving a message is still
slow.
The way I move a message is to open the context menu and go to copy, I arrow up
once to move and then right arrow. I enter a few letters of the mail box name
and when it comes up press enter.
It is slow when I first do this. If I move a second message it is often more
responsive. It was not doing this in Mojave, although I think it did in the
beginning.

It is now slow but much more usable.
I keep a lot of messages in organized mailboxes under many accounts and I
wonder if there is some time needed for everything to settle in after the OS
upgrade.
