I'm surely not. But I'll try pressing Left Arrow and see if they close
when it happens.

Sounds like you are pressing the right arrow key when you land on a
folder name,, which expands the folder to reveal the folder’s contents.

I've had Macs of various stripes in my life since 2009, and I'm always
stumped by the following problem when I set up a new one, which I just
did today with the arrival of the Mini with the M1 processor. If I
display files and folders in a list view, as ai arrow down and
encounter a folder, it automatically opens, showing me its contents in
the list. I usually have that set to open if and only if I use the
Command-Down Arrow command to do so. What setting do I need to change
to stop folders from automatically opening, and return to the way they
were on previous versions of MacOS? Some to whom I have put this
question have insisted I use Column View which they say is much easier
and more intuitive. To this, I say, thanks but no thanks, I like my
list view, and I want it to behave as it has probably since Snow Leopard.
Thanks in advance.
