Hi Brad and All,

Well, I agree with both Donna and Tim. I ordered my MBA this afternoon and went
with Donna’s approach. I think the unit might show up sooner than the date they
gave me which was June 8-10. Of course, it’s an estimate anyway.

Best,

Les

I agree with Donna. Since you can’t upgrade either storage or RAM on current
Macs, you are stuck with what you get when you purchase the device. Therefore,
in order to future-proof your purchase, get as much RAM and storage as you can
possibly afford, so you don’t end up with a device that won’t meet your future
needs.

Hi Les,

Tim is right, 8 is probably ok for most users. I tend to overbuy, given that
what you buy is what you have until your next upgrade, and I’m hoping to keep
this machine for a while.

Cheers,

Donna

Hi Donna,

Okay, I didn’t realize there was a faster GPU. The representative in the store
felt the default configuration of 8 MB Ram was plenty for my needs. I did feel
he was trying to sell what was in the store. That’s fine, I’ve had enough
experience with sales people and I won’t respond to pressure. I think I’ll call
Apple and order via phone and configure it the way I wish it to be. All of the
info you are providing is extremely helpful and much appreciated.

Best Regards,

Les

Hi Les,

My MBA is replacing a 2017 Macbook Pro with a touch bar. It is definitely
usable, and with time, you get more used to it. But I never really liked it,
mostly because it’s response time was slow. Often I had to tap it several times
to initiate an action or function. I personally find function keys to be much
more efficient. The only thing I miss about not having it is the quick access
to imogis, but for all I know, there may be a way to accomplish that on the new
Mac, I haven’t really had time to explore that yet.

I got 16MB ram. I don’t plan to run Windows on it either, but I am of the
opinion that more RAM is always beter. :) I also went with the faster GPU.

Cheers,

Donna

Hi Donna,

Thanks for your response. Glad your current unit is working better! Yes, the
function keys are a definite plus. I am wondering if anybody with no vision can
use the touch bar? Did you get 8 MB RAM? Ity seems like that should be enough.
I don’t know if I would ever run Windows on this, or if that will even be
possible. If I got additional memory, I’d rather get it up front, perhaps that
would be the only option anyway. So thoughts on memory and the touch bar would
be appreciated.

Best Regards,

Les

Hi Les,

Thanks for your kind words. Re my experience, yeah, the first MBA was just
weird, and I still don’t know what to make of that. That said, much of my time
and frustration this week could have been saved if I’d thought to check do not
disturb sooner. It was one of those tsituations where, since I never use it,
it didn’t dawn on me that it could be the problem. Re the other issue, now that
I know where the Accessibility options are, it makes sense, but at the outset
it’s confusing, because you have both the login options under users, and the
Login Items tab. Now that all is working, I am very happy with my purchase.

Anyway, to answer your question. I chose the Air because I wanted a lighter
machine, though the difference between the Air and the Pro isn’t as significant
as it used to be. Cost was also a factor. But probably the biggest reason I
chose the Air was because I wanted function keys instead of a touch bar.

Cheers,

Donna

Hi All,

First, I wish to thank everyone for the great recent discussion about the new
Mac1 laptops. I am sorry Donna that you had so much difficulty with your unit.
The subsequent discussion has helped me recall many key commands and
configuration settings on the Mac. Yesterday, I went to the Apple Store to
receive hands-on demonstrations of the Air and MacBook Pro. I went in thinking
I wished the Pro, but the Air is definitely worthy of consideration. I have
numerous questions, but I will start with just one. What factors were important
to you in choosing either the Air or the Macbook Pro? Thanks for the assist.

Best Regards,

Les
