I do not use any Linux speech as it is for the same reason this quest for voiceover took so long. Granted I have scores of possible apple things to do long before considering work in the terminal, but I have even less reason to spend energy in that direction.

I believe there is a different terminal available with home-brew that some 
people says works better with VoiceOver. There is also a way to get EMACSpeak.
