This probably isn’t a spelling error in the PDF file at all. The most likely 
cause is that the “fi” ligature is being used in the typeset text, and the PDF 
isn’t properly accessible, so your screen reader isn’t
 Receiving the correct characters, even though both “f” and “I” are present in 
the text as shown on screen or printed.
You could convert the PDF file to text and then edit, I suppose. Editing the 
original PDF wouldn’t help, as it’s most likely correct as is.
