Phil, I bought a brand spanking new Zoom H1 Essential recorder. It does indeed come up talking first thing. Dave's spekulation must be correct. IF your unit did not come up talking, some sighted light dependent person must have turned speech off. I suppose you might use a service like Be My Ehes or Ira to get it turned back on at first then go from there.
