There is a button to mute and unmute the sound. Use f10. If you press f10 and nothing happens you likely have your function keys switched to work with software functions. If this is the case, use the fn key and then f10. The fn key on the bluetooth keyboard or Macbook keyboard is the key in the lower left corner.
