Hello Mike. I encounter this same problem virtually every time I use Mail.
In fact,, just now, while composing this reply to you, VoiceOver just stopped speaking and I had to issue Command+F5 several times to get it speaking again. VoiceOver also dies when entering information into Forms on the web. Most frustrating, to say the least.
