It is not really a solution but I find that the shortcut Command shift A which will take me straight to the Application folder more convenient than Launchpad. I cannot see what launchpad looks like but all it appears to offer is some fancy sound affects on opening an and an inconvenient layout involving grids and pages. In contrast command shift A will simply open the application folder with all your applications in a single alphabetical list. with Finder set to column view this is a very nice interface. Of course if you start to type the name of the app you want you do not even need to interact.
You will need to be on the Desktop or other Finder window for the shortcut to work.
