It's been a while but last I checked OSX still didn't have native
support for BluRay. So while there are lots of drives out there that
might be 'compatible' there will have to be some 3rd party software to
read it. You can find out more about this by searching on "bag of hurt"
and bluray. I think it came down to issue with implementing the DRM
scheme which travels all the way from the disk up the HDMI to the
display. If anything in that chain breaks or is missing playback fails.
Someday I want to get one of these drives as well so I can play with
this but it's pretty far down on the list. As others have said, when in
doubt go with the OWC folks as they have a history of finding
models/flavors of hardware that happen to work right and/or include the
bit of software to make it so.

Marc,
In addition to Esther's informative post, take a look at this link:

Hello Marc,
I don't use Blu-ray drives on my Mac, but if I were looking for such a
drive and wanted to ensure compatibility with my Mac, I'd check Other
World Computing, and either buy directly from them, or check what
standard products in this category they offer. You should not assume
that external burners will automatically be recognized in your Mac
applications in the same manner that native drives are. OWC has a
history of checking out and supporting these functions on the Mac. A
Google search of "owc bluray" brought up this link:
http://eshop.macsales.com/search/external+blu+ray
You can probably follow up with direct queries to OWC. And there are
likely list users who use DVD and Bluray devices who can help you more
with specifics.
HTH. Cheers,

So um... no one has any recommendations at all? I don't mean to be a
pest about it but I really need this for my iMac and have no clue
where to start. As mentioned in previous messages, I am looking for an
optical drive with Blu ray and CD read/write capability. I am assuming
any device that can read/write blue ray can do normal DVDs just fine
too?
Any help would still be grately appreciated.
