I haven't used this software but I think most DVD rippers simply copy the DVD MPEG2 files intact to your hard drive. You would then need to open those in something else to convert them from MPEG2 to AVI format. I suspect QuickTime Pro ($) or Handbrake (Free) might do what you want.
