If you want to jail break your Apple TV, one can install ATV Flash Black
from Firecord www.firecore.com on your Apple TV. From there, you can use
shares with Samba (windoww) AFP (Apple) or Linux (NFS). The media player
has a library which is searchable provided shares are set up. Your other
alternate would be to use a itunes server (it may or may not be on your
NAS) but a computer running ITUNES must be on, and home sharing must be
active for this to work properly. Jail breaking only currently works on
the Apple TV 1 and 2, but a break is in the works for teh ATV3. I use this
option (I don't jail break my phones, but I definitely do with ATV, and
myself and my family love the access to the movies we own on the server. I
can even play DVS movie audio tracks, and if I've encoded the DVDS
correctly with Handbreak, I can access (accessibly with VO) the audio
tracks. ATV flash black integrates with the Apple menus and is therefore
fully accessible.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if I can help anymore.

Hi,

I believe that the Apple TV requires Home Sharing to be able to pull things
from the local network. Music and other media that is purchased through
Apple and thus stored in iCloud can also be streamed to the Apple TV but
I'm pretty sure that regular sharing is not compatible due to the method of
sharing.

Hi All,

Does anyone know, can an Apple TV pull content from a NAS on a local
network? Either by providing the Apple TV in some manner the IP address,
folder share and user credentials of the share so that it can scan the
folder, or, by enabling iTunes Server which is a feature of my NAS.

iTunes Server is not the same as Home Sharing as found in iTunes the
application.

Any thoughts much appriciated… Essentually what I want to do is use
something like Apple TV to stream content from a share on my NAS rather
than having to push to it from iTunes or an iOS device.

thanks.
