Jean,
If you have the preview pane turned off, then you can use enter to read the 
mail messages.  If it's still turned on, then vo j will work to switch between 
the messages column and the message body.

To turn the preview pane off, from the message column, vo right arrow over to 
the horizontal splitter and interact with that.  then do a vo space. to 
simulate a mouse click.  that should get rid of it for you.  If it wasn't the 
vo space, then try vo shift m.  sorry, I'm having a semi brainless day due to a 
migraine.
