Unrelated to the sources point, but the API for applications to add
their own files into backups is well documented:

There's no reason why - with Fremantle's lack of sandboxing - these
have to be for the same package which created them.
Piotr also mentions backupmenu, but that's a far heavier solution
outside of the Maemo backup system (IIRC), but provides a superset of
this functionality.
