One of the things that we've found really useful on the Inkscape project is that the release notes for the next release are a wiki page. Then, as we're working on the next release the notes are being written. There is lots of peer pressure internally that when a feature is committed, the notes are written. These usually end up more detailed than most of the stuff that we publish on places like Freshmeat or to news sites. But having more detail and distilling means that things don't get forgotten as easily. Plus, must of the work is front loaded instead of being at the point someone really wants to get a release out.
