Simplest solution I can see, whilst still giving the user some indication of version number (3.4.1 tells you something over 0.0.1): the Application Manager only shows things of the form (\d+)(\.\d+)*? So, the example of 2.0.0+cvs20040908+mp4v2+bmp-0ubuntu6maemo1 would just appear as 2.0.0 in the view.
