Ok, that was pulseaudio[*] getting in the way :-( See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/434520 Solution in message #20, I doubt it will last long (the workaround for the network freezing the pc lasted until the next reboot).
