Worked fine. Might be an idea for you to copy what I did:
convert logo: logo1.jpg
convert logo: logo2.jpg
composite -gravity NorthWest logo1.jpg logo2.jpg result.jpg
If this still generates errors then I suspect you still have an install
problem. If not, then I would suspect your source images.

Both of your exmples worked ok with .jpg but not with png.
I get the follwoing error:
composite: unable to open module file
`/usr/local/lib/ImageMagick-6.3.3/modules-Q16/coders/png.la': No such
file or directory.
I don't have the png.la
