I forgot to send this to the list, instead of just Gunter.  I'm pretty
sure this is what the problem is with the archive.org images.
pdfimages probably won't be able to handle it either.

The reason is very likely that the PDF is too new for Acrobat 5 to handle.
The images within the PDF, for most archive.org books, are a variant of
JPEG2000 using segmented coding.  I don't think ImageMagick is going to do
too well either.

I would upgrade Acrobat if possible. If that leads to conflicts, consider
reading the DJVU versions of the same books from archive.org. They use very
similar encoding so they achieve the same wonderful compression, and the
DJVU plugin won't interfere with your Acrobat installation.
