I have the same problem, also running on WinXP, and Pine/SSL works fine.
I tried your test, with {my.server.name/ssl/novalidate-cert}
and got the same message as Mahogany: "?Unexpected SChannel error 80090302 -
report this" and "?Can't establish SSL session to my.server.name/imaps,993"
Any help would be appreciated. This seems like a general XP + SSL problem.
