Sorry for being cryptic :-).  IMHO, the answer to the above question 
is many. If we have just a global search results, would that be 
really useful for the work involved?

Yes, it does, and it works pretty nicely. I also know that the 
implementation was quite difficult, particularly when synchronizing 
updates across several virtual and real folders.
