i think it comes down to the fact that the un*x stdin interaction with an
mta or other mail front end is not a particularly well documented or
standardized interface, unlike SMTP. what got me going was the fact that i
saw this behaviour and forgot that i have mahogany set up to use the local
exim rather than port 25.
