after all that research i did, i'm inclined to disagree.
programs like /bin/mail and /bin/mailx don't require doubling the .
programs like sendmail and exim do. it is interesting to note that exim
recognizes if it is called as /bin/mail and changes its behavior to match
those programs. i don't know enough about sendmail, but it might well do
the same thing. given this, i think that being able to specify the command
line is sufficient, with appropriate documentation indicating how options
ought to be set. this is clearly not a new problem, and the major MTAs seem
to be well equipped to deal with the situation.

hindsight is 20-20. at least the problem is easily dealt with the way
mahogany is currently set up.
