 unfortunately I have bad news for you -- Mahogany is not really usable as
a news client right now. It *can* be used to read news but honestly it's
not very good at it simply because too many features of a decent newsreader
are lacking.

 This looks like a bug -- there is an extra '}' in the folder spec. Using
"/anonymous" for NNTP is wrong as well and I've just fixed it in the
sources -- after this change I was able to open a newsgroup on my NNTP
server without any problems.

 Stranger and stranger... Could you please explain what exactly are you
doing?

 Sorry, I'm completely lost by now. Where is it changed? Does this have
anything to do with NNTP or not?

 Anyhow, you should really try the latest Win32 snapshot instead of .64
(there were many changes for the better since then) but, as I said, you
still won't be able to use it to read news comfortably. For reading mail it
works very well IMHO however.
