 First of all, if I understand correctly, the dialog is still shown -- just
without the subjects/headers. I think it's ap ity because when you're on a
really slow dial up connection it's nice to see the details of the messages
being retrieved...

 It is unneeded, sure, and I've a bug about this. But if you really have to
download all messages (to thread them when the server doesn't support
threading for example) the dialog is useful and I don't believe it slows
things down.
