this is what comes of thinking into the mail client.
the obvious answer, assuming that we do a local article cache deal, is to
record extra status info with the cached article. you'd want to cache
headers at a minimum, even if you don't cache bodies.
so forget the db stuff, i don't think it's really going to contribute much.
