I guess the default is set to do the same thing my settings do. When you
open the folder it "goes to", but does not display (select), the first
unread message. It is not selected but the message index pointer indicates
it as the CURRENT message. When you click the "Next Unread" button it goes
to the NEXT unread message and SELECTS it and displays it when it is
selected.

As a stopgap, simply click on the highlighted message (first unread) when
the message table shows up to cause it to be SELECTED and displayed, and
'read'. Or, change your folder view settings to:

1) return to last selected message (so the first unread is not the one
highlighted) or

2) click the "select initial message" so when the first message is
high;ighted it is also selected, displayed, and marked as read.

The "Next Unread" icon function should probably actually be changed to
select the FIRST unread message in a folder, or have a config option
available to switch it between the two functions (first unread mode or next
unread mode) depending on users desire. It would actually annoy me if I
were to use it and it selected the first unread message in a folder. I
leave messages unread if I don't have time to answer them right away. The
only toolbar icons I use are DELETE, COMPOSE, REPLY, and EXIT. I tend to
use keyboard shortcuts (CTRL-U - next unread) or direct clicks in the
message list pane.

The only "button" I'd like to see changed is the "Check Mail" button. I use
an IMAP message store and "Check Mail", doesn't. I have to select the INBOX
and use the "Update Subtree" function under the "F"older menu to update the
new message status of all the folders in my tree. So, checking for new mail
is either three clicks or one click and a double keystroke (ALT-F, T).
