This weekend 8 teams competed at the John Jackson Memorial Team Race Regatta @ Georgetown University. The regatta is named in honor John Jackson who graduated from Georgetown in 2003. John, from Kansas City, had never sailed before he came to Georgetown but decided to join the team for the challenge and to meet new people. John was the life of the Georgetown team for three years, he became a great crew and was an even better teammate. Shortly after graduating in 2003 John passed away after a tragic accident in Chicago, IL. John's parents Dr. and Mrs. Jackson watched the first day of racing and spoke about John at the skippers meeting.
Over the course of two days two round robins and a final four were completed. Saturday saw light NW winds which proved to be very challenging for the competitors. Big puffs and wind shifts led to a few capsizes and many close finishes. Sunday the wind shifted to the south and provided ideal team race conditions. A big thanks is due to Doc Sullivan who served as chief umpire for the weekend and did a fantastic job keeping the racing clean. Nik Holtan joined Doc both days and between the two umpires they were able to umpire almost every race. There were no protests on Saturday and three on Sunday. A big thanks also to the Georgetown undergrads who ran a great regatta. Overall Results 1. Connecticut College 14-3 2. NY Maritime 11-6 3. Rhode Island 8-9 4. Georgetown 8-9 5. St. Mary's 7-7 6.
