Eli, Thanks for the suggestion. The original Makefile outputs a great deal to the console. I commented out everything but the problematic code, which still demonstrates the problem. The modified Makefile is:
all: clean refman.pdf pdf: refman.pdf refman.pdf: refman.tex # pdflatex refman.tex # makeindex refman.idx # pdflatex refman.tex latex_count=5 ; \ while egrep -s 'Rerun (LaTeX|to get cross-references right)' refman.log && [ $$latex_count -gt 0 ] ;\ do \ echo "Rerunning latex...." ;\ pdflatex refman.tex ;\ latex_count=`expr $$latex_count - 1` ;\ done clean: rm -f *.ps *.dvi *.aux *.toc *.idx *.ind *.ilg *.log *.out refman.pdf I then ran make on this Makefile with the --debug=vj option using both the earlier and the latest make versions Case (1) C:\msys\1.0\bin in PATH, mingw32-make (from mingw32-make-3.81-2.tar.gz) and --debug=vj Console output: GNU Make 3.81 Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
