Yes, that was it. I assumed DATABASE mode meant I didn't need an upload path that was truly valid. Not so. BTW, I found the information in a post by chrislaurie on the SME Server forum at contribs.org quite helpful in resolving this issue. Here is the link in case someone else can make use of it: <http://contribs.org/viewtopic.php?t=32194&highlight=mantis> The tripwire is to create an uploads directory with the appropriate owner and permissions. www.www 770 worked for me on SME Server 7.
