Yes, that was it. I assumed DATABASE mode meant I didn't need an  
upload path that was truly valid. Not so.

BTW, I found the information in a post by chrislaurie on the SME  
Server forum at contribs.org quite helpful in resolving this issue.

The tripwire is to create an uploads directory with the appropriate  
owner and permissions. www.www 770 worked for me on SME Server 7. SME  
Server is based on Centos.
