We use to add two lines the launch at startup in /etc/rc.local.

In the last period we also configure it as a service with a proper
script associated to a RunLevel.

This is done to also have a correct and clean shutdown procedure and to
prevent any corruption in MapGuide XML DB (we had it a couple of times
and it was an annoying problem).

As I know from others are in touch with us, the all use the
/etc/rc.local, but from my perspective could be more useful to have is
as an independent service with independent script to start in a well
defined Run Level.

Subject: [mapguide-users] Services on Linux

A question to those that are more familiar with Linux.

What is the standard practice for running something the equivalent as a
service on Windows?

I ask this question based on the recent email where the user had not
started either Apache or MapGuide. This has happened several times so it
would seem to me that we should be configuring installs to make these
process run at startup.

What is the best way to implement this and what kind of installer work
would be required?

Regards,

Dave
