David Bradbury, thanks very much for your summary of the history of
the VM scenarios. Now I can see why Ken Towe defends his scenario so
assertively. Thanks also for your reminder of your own scenario, and
I now remember the delight I had on first seeing your projections
some five years ago. A particular recommendation to everyone else:
see David's synopsis of early reviews of VMTR at
http://homepages.tesco.net/~trochos/vinland/reviews1.htm , which
shows how gentlemen can disagree. It particularly brings to mind the
questions on the language of the major inscription
(Henricus): everyone considering this must now remember that the
author was constrained in his choice of words to make the cryptogram
work -- an admirable feat. (Ken Towe will tell you that it still
contains an error, but so do most beautiful mosaic tile floors. The
error does not affect the working of the cryptogram, and is probably
a copying error from the worksheet. The second cryptogram is perfect.)
Michael Ross, I have considered Kirsten Seaver to be more a part of
the press than of the solution; but I look forward to having time to
look at her new paper.
Terry Deveau, Thanks for your support for the values of open
discussion. To follow Dee Longenbaugh's request to take the
discussion private, we'd probably have to go to a boxing ring rather
that a kitchen table experiment!
Kirsten Seaver, your comment, "the [VM] book's authors showed
themselves woefully ignorant, and they passed their ignorance on to
an unsuspecting public," is quite at variance with the early reviews
that David Bradbury synopsized, and doesn't show the kind of spirit
we need to get on with the work.
Jim
