You are also strongly encouraged to use GhostScript (if you haven't already done so) 
from:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
GhostScript is really a robust tool to convert PostScript files to other format, 
including AI. GSview makes it easy to learn and on frequent use, it is simple task to 
automate the process in MapBasic Run Application statement with various ghostscript 
commandline options.
That is also the trick for high-quality raster files from MI with no pain.
