well..... let's see being Canadian my self (but working in the US) I
understand your frustration. It's great here in the Us cause we have access
to MapMarker... but you don't (I don't think).
But here's some insight as to improving your "hit rate". First...... look
at your data...you'd be surprise to find out how much "un geocodable" stuff
there is in there. for example:
1) Do a query to find out all PO Boxes..... you can't geocode to those
2) Do a query to find out all "rr's" Rural Routes ....you can't geocode
to those.
3) Sort your database by addresses in ascending order..... you'd be
surprise to find out how many address fields don't even have an address
4) Do the above sort in Descending order.... you'd also be surprise to
find out how many address don't even have a "civic" number. (You know that's
the number "222" in the address 222 Main street. So all you'll have is "Main
Street"
5) sort you database by "city" in Ascending order..... you'd also be
surprised to find out how many records are missing that filed....and without
it.....you can't geocode properly..........
6) If you geocoding in Quebec, check to see how you handle accents in
French. If your street network file has them and your addressing structure
doesn't......then you have to put either one of them in sync with the other
and vice-versa.
7) Also for Quebec...you might want to check your .abb file (that' your
abbreviation file) for AVE=Avenue, Blvd=Boulevard.... if you don't have for
example "rue" for Street... then you might want to add those in
there........ otherwise the geocoding engine thinks "rue" is a misspelled
name..........
Once you've cleaned all of this out....... Geocode all over
again.....thus you're hit rate should of put you in the high 90
percentiles..........
If you need anymore help........ let me know

Subject: MI MapInfo and Geocoding
I require a bit of information on Geocoding in MapInfo. To improve the
process, would I have to write MapBasic code or acquire more
accurate/up-to-date maps and data? Does a third party solution or .mbx exist
to improve MapInfo's built in Geocoding capabilities? For example, using
addresses and postal codes and name to search for matches. Our geocoding of
client addresses hits around 88% (the last time it was run) and I'm not sure
how to begin improving this. And is this considered reasonable in hits found
'automatically' with the rest being geocoded interactively and/or manually?
The MapInfo User's Guide provides little insight regarding the improvement
of hits. Any direction or insight about Geocoding would be greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Nilmini
