New information has arrived to add to this summary. First, I must
confess that I screwed up on when I listed the exchange rates between
the dollar and the pound and euro. The current (and hopefully correct)
rates are listed below.

In Israel you can get programming in MapBasic, MapX, MapXtreme NT and
MapXtreme Java for $350 per day. Thanks to the Internet, they can work
on jobs for anyone who's connected.

In Maine (USA) the cost for experienced MapX/MapXtreme plus Oracle
Spatial and SpatialWAre is about $1000/day, $120/hr. However, jobs are
generally negotiated on a flat rate plus expenses for projects of any
size.

In France, a freelance developer stated that he charges (for 3D
development) anywhere from a smile when starting a new technology to
EURO 1000. He adds, "...the rates are very different from project to
project, personal interest and famine level."

He also points out that it's hard to make comparisons of rates between
countries. The factors involved are not equal. He states: "As an
example, in France, as a [freelance] developer, 80% of the amount I bill
vanishes: 20% VAT, 20% direct taxes, 20% on social [contributions], and
a 20% more in a bunch of taxes like: local administration (city
council), tax on your professional activity, tax on your professional
estate, tax on employees [...], special pensioners tax and so on
(they're very very imaginative.)"

Eighty percent for taxes?! Yikes! No wonder he sometimes bills only a
smile. Imagine the look on the tax man's face when he opens the envelope
and dumps out a smirk (80% of a smile.)

So that this additional summary is connected with the original, I
include the previous message below. Corrected exchange rates are listed
at the bottom.
